A guide to buying your first car

You are ready to purchase your first car.

What questions should you be asking before you hand over your hard earned money?

Service history

Does the car have a full service history with company service stamps? If so is it a full service history? Were the services within the manufacture’s guidelines?

If a car has not been serviced properly this could affect mechanical reliability and engine life.

Condition of brake disks and pads

If the brake disks and pads are worn down considerably you may have to purchase a new set within your first few months of driving.

The cost for a full set of front and rear disks and pads including fitting may cost you a few hundred pounds.

Cambelt / cam chain

Check if the vehicle needs a cambelt change or if there is one due soon.

Cam belts that have exceeded their recommended mileage or age can snap and this can completely destroy your engine.

A cam chain is on its way out if it has excessive rattling, this can be due to a lack of regular oil changes.

Accident damage

Has the vehicle been in an accident? Is the car a category damaged repair vehicle as classified by insurers?

A vehicle that has been in a serious accident may have less structural integrity if involved in a future accident.

Last owner / owners

If the car was registered to any company where it may have been used by multiple drivers or for hire and reward the vehicle may have sustained more wear and tear on its components.

Warranty

Cars when they go wrong can be costly to maintain.

If your car is constantly off the road this is frustrating not to mention the cost of repair bills.

Always check if your vehicle comes with a warranty and how long it lasts.

Check about the cost of purchasing an extended warranty.

Higher purchase check for outstanding finance

You need to make sure that the vehicle you are purchasing has no outstanding finance.

Worst case scenario somebody could try to sell you a vehicle which doesn't belong to them that is legally owned by a finance company.

Vehicle inspection

The safest way to check out the condition of your car prior to purchase is by paying for an independent vehicle inspection.

The mechanic of your choice will visit the car dealership or individual who is selling the vehicle and conduct an inspection and road test of your chosen vehicle.

You normally receive a written report which highlights any issues with the vehicle.
